This is a late 18th century 2 1/2 story Colonial style house with a mid 19th century porch addition. Local lore has It that it was built for Betsy Burr, wife of Shubael Burr, keeper of a tavern on Main Street and that the house was originally located on Main St. and was moved to this site in the mid 19th century. This theory appears in both the RIHPC report and the National Register application. The WPS plaque research, however, shows that this lot, then vacant, was sold by Samuel Burr to Jesse Davis in 1792 and I can’t find any evidence to suggest that the house was not built by Davis shortly thereafter.
Probably built as a 5 bay center chimney house.
The windows are wood 6/6.
The siding is wood clapboard.
The chimney is old replacement.
As it appeared in the late 1920s.
1792, Deedbook 3, page 296. Samuel Burr sells lot to Jesse Davis for $50.
